Checklist: 10 Secrets to Creating a Great Incentive Plan Article Featuring Jeff Kaye, co-Chief Executive Officer at Kaye/Bassman in Dallas, Texas
Dallas, Texas, 5/10/2011: Motivating your employees to excel takes more than coming up with a contest. To create a successful incentive plan, make sure the incentive is in keeping with your company values, is clear and simple, and generates the behavior you want.
Here are 10 action items to create a quality incentive program and inspire your staff, compiled with the help of Keith Jennings, an Arizona-based HR specialist at Insperity, Jenna Hilb, regional operations manager in Denver at Quiznos, and Jeff Kaye, co-CEO of Kaye/Bassman International Corp.
- Include everyone. Make sure everyone in the group you are targeting is included in the reward system. You don’t want to inadvertently exclude a specific group and consequently violate discrimination law.
- Give them what they want. Make sure you are giving your employees something they are interested in. For example, just because you love the rodeo and country music doesn’t mean your employees will want to be rewarded with box seats at the annual rodeo. At the same time, a much cheaper, but more personal, reward may be better received. For example, give a subscription to a golf magazine for the avid golfer or O for the Oprah fan.
- Token gesture. The goal is to motivate your employees. A token gesture will be recognized as just that. Put thought and time into it. Your efforts will show.
